This is my 5th and the last article for now about plants and its focus on plants that purify the air from gases produced by detergents and cosmetics. This is especially important because of the extensive use of them in the bathroom.
In a bathroom that has little or no light, or even no window, leaving the bathroom door open as much as possible can bring in light from another room or the hallway. This is also a good way of circulating air through a bathroom that suffers from damp or lack of air circulation.
1. Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm)
Rhapis excelsa has grown in southern China and Taiwan, and can clean the air in your bathroom from ammonia molecules.
Lady Palm does better in low light than any of the other indoor palm trees. It also loves the added humidity found in most bathrooms. This extra humidity will also help keep the leaf tips from turning brown!
The lady palm, sometimes called the bamboo palm or miniature fan palm.
The Aglaonema plant comes to us from Asia and New Guinea, and can help you clean the air of formaldehyde molecules, which are created by cosmetic products.
3. Hedera helix (English ivy)
Hedera helix grows in most of Europe and western Asia, it has a unique feature that causes it to absorb carbon dioxide from the air and disassemble it. In addition, it helps reduce mold in your home, and removes formaldehyde, xylene, benzene and trichloroethylene from the indoor air which is important in the damp shower room.
This beautiful vine does great in low light situations. When you choose your English ivy, make sure to choose one with solid green leaves rather than white or yellow variegation. The green varieties do a lot better with low light conditions.
4. Aloe Vera
I mentioned the Aloe vera plant as a good plant in the kitchen as it is generally known for its healing properties. It is also very useful in the bathroom:
- as a makeup remover, and a face cream: Aloe vera gel is antibacterial and moisturizing for your skin.
- as a moisturizing scrub: mix the gel with some brown sugar and scrub your skin with it. This removes the dead cells and hydrates your skin at the same time.
- When mixed with water Aloe vera gel can help you get rid of bad breath.
The plant is more resourceful than you might think. It can not only help clear the air of pollutants found in cleaning products but has also a simple system to indicate if the amount of harmful chemicals in the air becomes excessive: brown spots appear in the leaves.
If you have more interesting information regarding those plants or other plants that can be valuable in the kitchen I would love to hear about it in the comments.
